I learned to spool knit with a 4-peg loom as a child – though I didn’t know the proper name for the craft then. My sisters and I made hot pads and little rugs.
This video was a real trip down memory lane for me. Thank you.
It amazes me oven more to see what you create with such a simple little device!

Hi Noreen,
At 65, I’m finishing a project I started at the age of 8. I have 4-peg knitted about 150 feet of rope. It’s time to make the long-awaited oval rug! I’m not sure of the best way to assemble the rug to avoid waving edges. I have partly assembled with a large zigzag stitch. It looks good, but outer edge is wavy. Should I continue to the end and block it, or is there a better method? I’d prefer not to apply a backing if possible.

How wonderful that you still have your childhood project, Diane! Personally, I would have chained the cord first before starting the stitching process. Lay the rug on a flat surface and put weights on it to keep it flat. Have you seen my video tutorial on stitching spool knitted cords to woven pieces? Hi Diane
To chain the spool knitted cord, take a large crochet hook, and make a slip knot with the cord. Then chain it by pulling up loops as if the cord was a strand of yarn. It gives a lovely effect and makes the process of building the rug go faster.
