It’s the little things- A tiny woven dog, cat and bunny

I love designing and weaving little things. And, today, we are releasing the pdf pattern and kits for 3 dear small woven critters-

I love cats, dogs and bunnies, so I couldn’t resist weaving these three friends as part of the Lily Doll project.

The puppy and kitty were based on ‘real life’ critters, but feel free to adapt the colorways to match your own personal favorite pets.

By the way, on the 15th of each month through 2024, we will be releasing a new kit for a design that I have made for the Lily Doll project. They’re all available at the mirrix website.

We’re planning some other fun things, too. I’ll post about them as they come up.

A Teeny Tiny Woven Panda

Panda bears…. so sweet! I can’t resist…. so I wove a tiny Panda, using scraps of yarn left over from the Lily Doll kit (using the instructions from the Tiny Teddy Bear in the Lily Doll Project)

He felt like having a little nap so I tucked him into the teeny tiny crib. Two of the Tiny Bears raced over to see who was this new little friend in the studio.

Panda said that he was a little chilly all alone in the crib, so the Little Bears invited him to hop into their cozy bed and tell them all about himself….

They are so happy being together in the studio that they are hoping that there will be more bears coming along, soon to join them! They posed for a few photos…

And went back to bed to tell each other winter stories and to nap and dream of Springtime….

Woven Sloth

The day my daughter said to me: “Mum, you should design a woven sloth!”, turned out to be a happy one 🙂

I had always liked sloths, but until I started designing one, I didn’t realize how incredibly enchanting they are.

Their sweet nature is so clear to see on their faces!

I’ve been weaving and selling sloths in my booth at Maker’s Faires and Artisan Markets for more than a year and a half now, and people just love them- they always spark a chortle or a grin.

My daughter in law wants me to make one for her to hang on her spinning wheel, so I got out my potholder loom today and started working on one for her.

She told me that this week is ‘International Sloth Week’, so I thought… okay….

it’s time to publish my pattern in honour of the sweet slowpokes!

How to weave a tiny square on the Zoom Loom

There is an ongoing Weave Along on the Zoom Loom group on Ravelry.

I love weaving dolls, so I was hooked on the idea of weaving one doll for each of the seasons, using the Zoom Loom from Schacht.

I sketched my thoughts about the ‘Winter’ doll, and always in all the sketches- pockets showed up.

It was essential that my Zoomie doll have pockets. After all… Winter= Cold= Gotta have pockets!

So, I had to figure out a way of weaving tiny squares on the Zoom Loom (it’s the Zoom Loom weave along, so no cheating by crocheting or knitting the pockets).

I figured out a nifty way of weaving wee little squares on the Zoom Loom and have made this video showing how to do it.

I think that the 4 seasons Zoom Loom Doll Weave Along is going to be great fun.

By the way- I love the little Zoom loom and I don’t profit by singing it’s praises.

The weave along is going to continue all through out 2014, so do join in.

I am just a member of the Ravelry group, and not a moderator or anything, so if you have questions, join the group, and hop right in.

I’ll be posting more tutorials as I make them, showing the unusual ways that I am using the Zoom Loom.

New woven toys

I have a passion for weaving toys that are not just for children, but also to light up the heart of adults, too.

Over the last year, I have been designing and weaving all manner of woven wonderfuls for my booth in all the heaps of artisan’s markets and maker’s faires that I have been doing.

Which is why I have been rather remiss in blogging – it’s all about the weaving, these days 🙂

It’s been a pleasure to let my imagination run wild and create one of a kind pieces without worrying about having to make sure that I can repeat the process to make patterns.

Not to imply that I don’t like designing and making patterns- I really do!

BUT…. it’s delicious to simply let my hands fly and listen to what emerges…. and to respond to what WANTS to emerge! In which case, I have had to build a series of new little looms to keep up with those ‘wanting weavies’. 🙂

Here are a few of my latest pieces:

I never get tired of weaving homages to Albert Einstein 🙂

Everyone in our family really likes gargoyles, so I had to weave one (and I feel the need to weave more! LOL)

And, we all quite like frogs- in fact, the joyous uproar of frog song in springtime is one of our favorite things!

This fellow seems very affable to me….

This Debonaire Ginger Cat is actually based on one of my patterns that is available on my website LINK or on my etsy shop.

And, for that matter, the pattern for dragons woven on the potholder loom is also available on my website:

And now, back to ‘one of a kinds’ – This is Dumpling Darling:

Ahhhhhhhh, babies….. I love to weave babies of all descriptions, like baby piglets:

Oh, yes, a monster or two….

And, sometimes, a fairy toadstool wants me to weave it….

At Christmas, I wove a capybara for my son in law:

So, now you see why my blogging hasn’t been up to scratch in 2013…. 🙂 Too busy weaving….

But…. I do plan on being more active with my blog in 2014….

I have a lot of photos of pieces for my Woven Women show that I haven’t posted, so I need to get back to posting those. All in good time 🙂

More photos of projects from the Lily Speed-O-Weave loom book

A lady on Ravelry just asked for more of a preview of what is in the Lily Speed-O-Weave loom book (link to page on my website)

The first two sections of the book teach a ton of useful and neat techniques for working with the Lily Speed-O-Weave looms- there are several different ways of wrapping the looms, how to tie the intersections, how to weave more than just hexagons on the hexagon loom ( half hexagon motifs and triangle motifs), how to make easy linings for projects, how to spool knit edgings over a core, how to make butterflies and hearts on little triangle looms (don’t have a small triangle loom? I’ve made a couple of video tutorials on how to weave triangles on the potholder loom. See Potholder loom page ), plus the special hexagonal grid paper that I drew to be able to design with the hexagons. (Hexagons are tricky critters until you unlock the code on them! 😀 ) As well, there are instructions on how to work with the square and rectangular Lily Speed-O-Weave loom. And a whole lot more….

How to make hexagonal AND square baskets from upcycled fabric strips from torn up clothing- of course, you can use yarn, roving, string or cord to make the baskets, but I really enjoy using fabric strips, so I did the baskets with them.
